What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a negatively charged monoatomic ion naturally found in drinking water and some food sources and has been proven to be an essential element in developing and maintaining sound dental health.  Since 1903, the benefits of fluoride in caries reduction have been widely recognized and studied by scientists. Additionally, fluoride is found in toothpastes, mouthwashes, topical gels, varnishes, etc. as sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, and sodium monofluorophosphate compounds.

What is Function of Fluoride?

Scientifically speaking, fluoride ions reduce the solubility of the hydroxyapatite (about 97% of our tooth enamel structure) phase, and enhance the crystallization kinetics of the enamel remineralization process. In addition, fluoride ions diffuse into the hydroxyapatite crystal structures making fluorapatite which is extremely less soluble than hydroxyapatite, even under acidic conditions. In other words, fluoride strengthens teeth especially the outer surface of the enamel and making them more resistant to decay.

Reasons to Get the Floride Treatment

The Benefits of Fluoride Treatment:

Although most individuals get fluoride through food and water, it isn’t always enough to keep teeth from decaying. For the following reasons, your dentist or dental hygienist may advise you to utilize fluoride treatments at home and/or at the dentist’s office:

  • Deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth
  • Exposed and sensitive root surfaces
  • Fair to poor oral hygiene habits
  • Frequent sugar and carbohydrate intake
  • Inadequate exposure to fluorides
  • Inadequate saliva flow due to medical conditions, medical treatments, or medications
  • Recent history of dental decay

We Can Prevent Tooth Decay If We Work Together
Fluoride alone will not protect your teeth from decay! Brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing regularly, eating balanced meals, limiting sugary snacks, and visiting your dentist on a regular basis are all essential.
