What Are Dental Implants and Do I Need Them?

Dental implants are an excellent technique to restore missing teeth and offer a permanent alternative to a dental bridge, removable partial, or complete dentures. In some specific cases, dental implants are necessary to support and create stability for other dental appliances.

What Does it Take to Get Dental Implants?

Implant placement necessitates a series of appointments spread out over several months.
To evaluate the amount of bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant, X-rays, and imprints (molds) of the jaw and teeth are taken. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone. additionally, the implant is allowed to heal and integrate for up to several months. A second surgery may be required, depending on the type of implant, to put the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place. Other implants have both the post and the anchor attached and implanted at the same time.

Common Applications of Dental Implants:
  • Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth
  • Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into missing tooth space
  • Restore a patient’s confident smile
  • Restore chewing, speech, and digestion
  • Restore and or enhance facial tissues
  • Support a bridge or denture, making it more secure and comfortable

A dentist surgically places prosthetic roots and teeth (typically titanium) into the upper or lower jaw bone. Implant-supported teeth have a very natural appearance and can often improve or restore a patient’s smile!

Dental implants are incredibly sturdy and long-lasting. Due to regular wear, they may need to be re-tightened or replaced on occasion.

Following Your Procedure

The implant crowns are fabricated and placed to the post component of the anchor after several weeks of recovery. This stage may take a few months to complete due to the need for multiple fittings. The replacement teeth are securely linked to the implant after a healing period, offering exceptional stability and comfort to the patient.
When your treatment is over, you will be given care instructions. Regular dental appointments, coupled with good oral hygiene and dietary habits, will help your new implant last longer.

Please contact our office if you have any concerns about dental implants or would like to schedule a consultation.
